Review of Mud (2013) by Chris H — 24 Mar 2014
This isn't just one of the best movies released this year, it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. A beautifully well-constructed American fable with a Mark Twain flair, it's themes of lost love and growing up are universal, but the story itself has enough originality to present a new take.
Everything comes together perfectly in this; from the performances to the direction to the most minute details of the very look of the film everything is executed to perfection. McConaughey gives a career defining performance, with a gritty and potentially threatening character who is quickly able to be understand and sympathized with by the characters and audience.
Even the younger unknown cast members give genuine performances, and help provide a sense of fun childhood adventure and nostalgia of first love. It's heartbreaking without being too depressing, and heartwarming without being too sappy.
It had my attention from the moment it began to the moment it ended.
