Review of Much Ado About Nothing (2013) by Katherine L — 14 Jun 2013
Around 1999/2000 Joss started holding Shakespeare readings at his home every Sunday with the cast of Buffy. James Marsters is very much responsible for the readings even happening as it was he who inspired Joss to do them.
As the years went by, the casts from Buffy, Angel, Firefly and eventually Dollhouse were brought together for these readings. After the fans read about them in interviews. we now get to see what had been going on at Joss's house every Sunday.
Joss knows his actors inside out, bringing their traits to this movie including shades of Alexis's early Wesley days shining through whilst delivering witty dialogue during an exercise routine, trying to impress Beatrice; which brings us to Amy's performance where she is sweet, feisty and witty during the entire film. Perfect casting.
Nathan Fillion and Tom Lenk make a hilarious double act even though Tom's performance is exactly like it was on Buffy which made me think Joss based Andrew on this Much Ado character. Or it could be that Tom will always be Andrew Wells and will never break from his buffy alter ego.
No surprise, Fillion stole the scenes every time he appeared with his very funny dialogue.
Joss gives all of his actors in Much Ado a chance to shine which adds to making this a very approachable film to those who don't read or are into Shakespeare, like myself. But Joss and his troup have made (for me) a very likable, engaging and watchable piece of Shakespeare.
As always, Joss has delivered yet again.
