Review of Much Ado About Nothing (2013) by Calvin C — 29 Jun 2013
Considered Shakespeare's best comedy and one of my personal favorites, I enjoyed Joss Whedon's modern take on this tale about love and deceit. The black and white photography is brilliant and the cast of Whedon alums make you laugh throughout. I know many Shakespeare experts will complain about the delivery of the dialogue, but I like how the actors spoke as they would if they were talking normal English in the modern day. It came off more natural and didn't sound like any of them were trying too hard to sound like a classically trained actor. Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof are sublime as the leads, and Nathan Fillion brings the comic relief. Some very interesting shots and interpretation of certain scenes makes this adaptation refreshing, original, while still staying true to the text.
Grade: A-.
