Review of Much Ado About Nothing (2013) by Rainer D — 10 Oct 2013
In all honesty, I've never read the play, but Joss Whedon's adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing was a fun modern/vintage aesthetic combination with the classical words of Shakespeare that isn't too flashy or overwhelmingly wrought.
It's a rather modest little comedy that has gorgeous cinematography. It's unlike anything he's embarked on and yet does it with class and taste. It might be close to impossible to do the story justice without Shakespeare's words, but I'm sure there could be much a more cleaver modern interpretation that wouldn't ruin the original work.
Being as it is, it was a charming little set up Whedon has put together after, what I can only presume, a long and tiresome undertaking of Marvel's The Avengers. If you are hoping for something epic or exciting in an action/thrill ride sort, this is NOT the movie you're looking for.
It's always nice to see a tycoon such as Joss Whedon humbling himself to a mere simple movie after jumping off the flanks of his predecessor/big blockbuster flick. If you're a fan, I'm sure you can appreciate that he incorporates his actors (from the world of Joss Whedon) in a fashion that suits the mood and stage well.
