Joss Whedon's modern dress adaptation of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing is a sheer delight. Filmed in and around his own home in Santa Monica and featuring a cast of close-knit friends who have gathered regularly to engage in play readings, the rapport between them and their understanding of the script is evident on screen.

Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker are a charismatic Benedick and Beatrice and the sparks fly between them. So vibrant and accomplished are the cast that Shakespeare's language becomes transparent, as if they were speaking in their own words.

Whedon's pacing is first-rate, moving from slapstick to drama with aplomb and keeping things moving at a brisk pace. This is a romantic comedy that is fresh, sexy and sparkling with so much to enjoy, including some inspired comic scenes.

Filmed in just twelve days and shot in black and white this is Shakespeare for those who believe his work is inaccessible to today's audience. Seeing is believing. Phil.
