This was essentially a homemade movie, just homemade by Joss Whedon and friends, and that actually adds a certain quaint charm to it. This isn't the standard Branagh or Olivier Shakespeare with big sets and big acting, it's a cute, charming little movie based on one of Shakespeare's simpler and sillier plays.
That's actually a nice change of pace, and makes it a little more approachable perhaps. There's a retro charm to it, and everyone involved in it looks like they're having fun which spreads to the viewers.
It respectably portrays the words of Shakespeare while adding some modern styling and sense of comedy. It's a cute, charming, fun little movie.
