Review of Much Ado About Nothing (1993) by Lane W — 17 Jun 2009
What would otherwise be merely a functional adaptation is elevated by fantastic performances from Branagh and, especially, Thompson. The wedding scene is highly over-acted by Leonard and Beckinsale's presence is almost entirely non-existent, but they look superb compared to the travesty that is Michael Keaton in this film.
In order to mask his misunderstanding of, well, everything, Keaton speaks in a strange accent, makes silly faces, and mumbles his way through all of his dialogue. Before I'd seen this film, all I knew was that Keanu Reeves' performance was supposed to be hideously bad and, while it's pretty atrocious, Keaton wins the award for Worst Part of This Movie.
As mentioned, though, Branagh and Thompson are perfect and make this worth the viewing. What of Denzel, you ask? It's Denzel, just with Elizabethan dialogue.
