Review of Much Ado About Nothing (1993) by Frances Ann A — 14 Jan 2012
Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson are wonderful in this Shakespeare adaptation of my favorite Shakespeare play, but everyone else is pretty mediocre. I could hardly understand a word uttered by Keanu Reeves (who ever thought he could act?). What is he doing in a cast of this caliber? Personally, I wanted to gag a bit at the first 10 minutes.
The women say: Yippee the men are coming home from war---let's all take a bath. Excuse me, but, does that mean they usually just wallow in filth? Michael Keaton was totally over the top and 90% incomprehensible too. If you like this play, check out the BBC version with Cheri Lunghi and Robert Lindsay from 1984---now that's fabulous.
