Review of Much Ado About Nothing (1993) by Christian C — 09 Oct 2012
Oozing this production from tip to toe with sugary sappiness, actor/director Kenneth Branagh pilots his second Shakespeare adaptation with impressive results, energetically transposing this four-hundred year old comedy into a beautiful bit of cinematic silliness.
Lead by the dynamic duo of Branagh and then-wife Emma Thompson, the actors are all commendable in their parts, excusing the casting of Keanu Reeves as Don Juan and Robert Sean Leonard as Claudio, which we must only attribute to a temporary lapse in Branagh's judgement.
With the one or two questionable casting decisions overlooked, "Much Ado About Nothing" is a delightful bit of cheesiness that will undoubtedly entertain everyone from the Shakespeare novice to the most avid bardolater.
