Review of Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (1994) by Julia S — 01 Aug 2008
"You don't want to turn into the town drunk, Eddie. Not in Manhattan." Director Alan Rudolph and actress Jennifer Jason Leigh separately have always been hit or miss with me. Together they're magic.
Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle is certainly a labor of love for all involved. There probably isn't one person in this huge cast who couldn't command more money for one project than this whole movie cost to make.
Dorothy Parker was always a fascinating character to me and this movie delves into her years as one of the shining lights of the famed Algonquin Round Table onto the end of her life. The look and feel of the period is captured perfectly.
But even more important, the mood is right too. The screenplay is great, in no short part because it features many of the famous quotes these people were known for. Highly recommend.
