Review of Mrs. Henderson Presents (2005) by Dan K — 06 Dec 2006
Not since Robert DeNiro had coffee with Al Pacino in Heat has the screen crackled with as much talent as watching Judi Dench match verbal wits with Bob Hoskins. Two of Britain's best put on an acting clinic here, each playing their respective characters to the strength of their own persona.
Judi Dench is haughty and self-important, fitting for the Dame, but she layers it with compassion and fragility. Bob Hoskins is suitibly gruff, as always, and stands his ground with gusto against Ms. Dench.
Had it not been for that bit of inspired casting, the film would have been suitibly mediocre, but with those two masters, the elevate it to one of the years more moving stories of coping with loss and facing adversity.
A definate diamond in the rough, and well worth seeing.
