Review of Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) by Mimi S — 05 Feb 2014
This is another one of my childhood favourites! Mrs Doubtfire really shows Robin Williams at his best! He's great in his other films too don't get me wrong, but I think I love him the most in Mrs Doubtfire. Mrs Doubtfire is about an immature, but good-hearted talented voice actor, Daniel Hillard (Williams) whose wife divorces him and doesn't let him see his beloved children very often. In bid to see his children more often, he enlists the help of his make-up artist brother to disguise him as an old woman, so he can apply for the nannying job that his ex wife Miranda (Sally Field) is advertising. Mrs Eugenia Doubtfire is born!! Mrs Doubtfire has to be one of the best children's movie characters of all time! Robin Williams is a really talented actor and pulls off his act so convincingly.
Mrs Doubtfire is a really moving, loveable and realistic films with messages close to home. I like how it's not the cliché Parent Trap kind of film; the film really shows the reality of divorce and how men don't always get a say or any rights. Sally Field is really good at playing the bitch ex wife. Pierce Brosnan is also at the film and at his peak gorgeousness! You see him and you're like WOW (ok maybe guys won't think wow unless you're gay or have a serious straight man crush). Pierce Brosnan is kind of a shit actor but you sort of forgive him; he's just a piece of eye candy that Daniel's ex wife Miranda is dating, enough to make Daniel jel! I mean any guy would be jealous if their ex was dating Pierce Brosnan.
OK enough about Pierce Brosnan. The film is really funny as well as moving; Robin Williams is hilarious and does the BEST voices!! OMG Robin Williams is one of my dream dinner guests; I'd get him to do voices for me all night. You don't even notice that he's Mrs Doubtfire most of the time. Mrs D is hilarious! Also this is one of the few films that Mara Wilson is in, which brings back the nostalgia of my childhood as I also loved Matilda. Mara Wilson is still quite freaky, adult in a child's body. I remember this was my second favourite film next to Matilda when I was a kid, I watched is time and time again. I could happily still watch this film again and again. It always makes me feel better. Love this film; its not just a film for kids, but it's something adults will get too. It's sincere, extremely moving and very funny! If you haven't seen Mrs Doubtfire you had no childhood, better make up for it now and watch it if you haven't already.
Grader: A*/A+.
