Review of Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie (2014) by Scott H — 27 Jun 2014
Unless you've been on a deep space mission to the moons of Jupiter, you'll be aware of the phenomenon that is Mrs Brown's Boys. The show about an Irish matriarch mother and her children has grown from its relatively humble roots as a small stage show at Glasgow's Pavilion Theatre, it spread through word of mouth and recommendations into a major tv smash for the BBC - it topped the Christmas ratings - and a global tour. What is surprising is that the show succeded despite that fact that the humour is not the "right-on" humour so favoured by those tv execs and critics but is traditional old fashioned laughs built around that un-PC concept - in this day and age - of the family.
In view of this, it was inevitable that a feature film would follow and Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie is the first of three promised films. The story is that Mrs Brown's market stall is threatened unless she can pay an outstanding tax bill to the authorities.
Almost all of the cast are here - the only exception I couldn't see was Maria's mother - and it's the usual mix of gags, innuendo and mistakes that characterise the tv show. If you love the show - and I'll happy own up to being one that does - you'll enjoy it although you may find it not up to the high standards set by the tv show. This may be because it takes a bit of getting used to seeing the show not in a studio set. Also some of the characters get more screen time than maybe they should whilst others barely appear. But in fairness it's hard to criticise a film that features blind Ninjas.
To sum up. If you don't like the show you will not enjoy it but if that's the case you were not going to go see it anyway. If you do like the show it's a good to great film. Also stay for the end credits as they feature the out-takes and they are brilliant.
