Review of Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie (2014) by Thomas J — 29 Jul 2014
MRS BROWN'S BOYS D' MOVIE.
I wouldn't call myself a fan of the Mrs Brown's Boys TV show, I have seen it a few times and had myself a bit of a chuckle. There was never really anything that made me want to come back to the series. But seeing the amount of people who were getting excited for the new movie, I thought I better go see it for myself.
It feels like I have seen this storyline before, especially in movies that are based on TV shows. Ali G Indahouse was pretty much the same, some corporate powerhouse trying to push the little guys around.
All the characters that I recognised from the show are here, which will keep the fans happy. And the comedy is pretty much the same, but sometimes it falls into that awkward 'dad joke' territory which can be hit or miss. Although I had some great laugh out loud moments, unfortunately it was mostly miss for me. But there was a couple in the theatre behind me that was losing it with every joke, so just because I didn't find it funny, doesn't mean you won't.
Brendan O'Carroll is charming as Mrs Brown, but also rocks up as a little Asian man, who I'm not sure if he was a character in the show, but he is a bit lame. Chris Liley this guy ain't.
Mrs Brown's Boys is a light piece of entertainment, not much thinking is involved so it's a good excuse to shut your brain off. Unfortunately I just didn't find it all that funny. A must see in cinemas for fans who want to see these characters on the big screen, as for the rest of you, wait for DVD.
2/5.
'Oh I'm dry! I love the movies!' - Mrs Brown as she steps out of a river only seconds earlier.
