Review of Mr. Woodcock (2007) by Brad W — 27 Sep 2009
In "Mr. Woodcock" Seann "I stupidly spell my first name with two n's" Scott stars as the writer of a self-help book who returns to his home town to accept an award, only to find that his mother is dating and about to marry a gym teacher played by Billy Bob Thornton who tortured him as a kid.
Billy Bob was hilarious in "Bad Santa" but he's an absolute train wreck here. I don't like to get overly complicated with my reviews of comedies. The only real thing that needs to be considered is if the film is funny or not.
Any surprises the film has to offer beyond that is simply icing on the cake. Keeping that in mind, this movie isn't funny. Not at all. Not even for a second. Every single solitary joke falls flat.
Thornton (who has show the ability to be funny in the past) is boring. Susan Sarandon is annoyingly boring. Seann William Scott is so incredibly annoying that he actually becomes the very definition of the word.
When you find yourself anxiously awaiting a a movies end not more than ten minutes into it, you know that it's bad, and that's exactly what happened to me with "Mr. Woodcock." If you're looking for a funny Billy Bob film look elsewhere.
If you're looking for a funny Seann William Scott film, good luck with that. You'd have a better chance of finding and unopened bottle of booze or an unsniffed line of coke in the swank Los Angeles party pad of Lindsay Lohan.
