Review of Mr. Woodcock (2007) by Jim C — 28 Feb 2011
To laugh at parts of this film would indicate one has a streak of Woodcockism in oneself. But to gaze in stupefied fascination is perfectly understandable. This film apparently sat around for a few years before being released. It's unlikely to make waves now, but Thornton and Scott do set off a few entertaining ripples. There aren't that many laugh-out-loud jokes in this comedy, yet Billy Bob Thornton's portrayal of ass-kicking gym coach Mr. Woodcock is almost worth the price of admission. That's what makes Thornton such a complex actor. The insult comedy is sometimes brilliant. Thornton's straight-faced growl is consistently funny throughout this mild but effective comedy.
VERDICT: "Rental" - (Negative to Mixed reaction). These films are only worth renting because of certain good things that are worth seeing, but are not worth paying at a theater to see due to bad things that overcome anything good.
