Review of Mr. Turner (2014) by Bobby B — 19 Jan 2015
A most excruciatingly dull movie. For a biopic movie about the famous British painter, whose works shine with kinetic energy, this movie could not be more opposite. J.M.W Turner is portrayed as a caricature that is as 2 dimensional as the canvas it is sketched on.
Interesting elements of Turner's life are rendered so dully and lifelessly in the screenplay that I can understand why this movie was doomed to fail. The choices by the director are puzzling. The camera is almost always static.
There is little movement with the actors as well. Yes, I understand this is a movie about a painter and one of the choices available would be to try to recreate the static nature of the paintings but it fails to understand the kinetic nature of Turner.
It is also a movie that has hardly any soundtrack. Very puzzling choices and a most painful experience overall.
