This is a beautiful, life-embracing, star-spangled explosion from Frank Capra - just as beautiful as It's a Wonderful Life, both in its grim examination of human rapaciousness and the sinister quagmire of capitalism and in its inestimable optimism and Hope.

James Stewart, forever the American Everyman, is, indeed, compelling as Jefferson Smith, a bastion of charity and egalitarianism in the midst of the Capitol's unabashed self-aggrandizement and marginalization of the masses.

His reaction to the bins of manipulated telegrams could undoubtedly crack even the most jaded and disaffected American heart. Claude Rains, perhaps the greatest of Hollywood's unsung dramatic marvels, is equally powerful as the morally twisted Senator Joseph Paine; his earth-shattering realization in the film's final moments is both terrible and wondrous to behold.

Harry Carey (as a lovably dry and long-suffering vice-president), Thomas Mitchell, Jean Arthur and Guy Kibbee form a spectacular supporting cast. Perhaps the greatest American film about America - as it regrettably is and as it should be.
