Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Rahul O — 30 Jun 2008
When Frank Capra and James Stewart join hands, brilliance is what you expect and brilliance is what you get in magnified proportions. Mr Smith Goes To Washington epitomizes the triumph of human spirit and resilience.
Released 70 years ago, the underlying issues in MSGTW like lobbying, commercial interests in political parlors, corruption and manipulation of the press are so relevant even today.
James Stewart is the heart and soul of this movie. I cannot imagine anyone else playing Jefferson Smith. That scene when all dejected, he is standing by Lincoln's statue with his suitcases, your eyes become moist. Only the innocence, charm and intensity of legendary Jimmy can make it happen.
