Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Gregory H — 05 Aug 2008
Total genius, everywhere. It was written by a card-carrying Communist but is quintessentially American. A story ingrained in our collective unconscious as much as the Revolutionary War or the Civil Rights marches. Jimmy Stewart's performance is perfect--one of the finest you can find anywhere. But Claude Rains as the Silver Knight, too, is brilliant, his look of heartbreak when Mr. Smith doesn't initially play the game is what heartbreak looks like.
And Frank Capra is good too.
