Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Kenneth D — 13 Sep 2008
The most patriotic film ever made. This is the ultimate film for anyone who truly loves America and democracy in all of its idealistic glory. James Stewart, in his greatest screen role, plays Jeff Smith, the junior senator from a western state, who has a romanticized view of the U.
S. Senate. He arrives, awed by where he is, and, unbeknownst to him, used by the political machine boss running the show in his state's political community. Upon being awakened to the corruption boiling over in the Washington political belt by a determined young aid, played masterfully by Jean Arthur, Smith risks his Senatorial career in the fight for all that is good about public service.
Strong performances by Claude Rains, Eugene Pallett, and Harry Carey Sr. A must see for all American voters.
