Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Drew T — 22 Oct 2008
One of the most uplifting, inspirational, enjoyable movies ever made. A young, idealistic man is appointed senator; he goes to Washington with plans to do good. He only finds corruption and greed, but he remains moral and tries to do the right thing in the face of certain destruction.
It's almost seventy years old, and to me it hasn't aged a bit. Most of that is attributed to James Stewart--one of the finest actors we ever had, and arguably the most likeable. He is helped by a fantastic array of supporting performances, good pacing, and a fine story and direction.
An absolute classic, this film--patronized upon release by many--is what being an American is all about. One of Frank Capra's best movies.
