Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Fabio M — 25 May 2009
A great, well written and terrificly acted film from beginning to end. Jimmy Stewart's major breakthrough role is still one of his best. He plays Jefferson Smith, newly appointed senator from Montana who upon his first visit to Washington, is being mocked by the newspapers and accused of stealing children's money!
Stewart does a fantastic job maintaining the emotional and comical aspects simultaneously.
Claude Rains is also very good as the "evil" Senator Joseph Payne who tries destroying Smith's reputation.
An outstanding supporting cast, accurate direction, genuine writing and a patriotic score make this film a classic...a memorable classic!
