Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Jack W — 22 Jul 2009
Has there ever been an actor more suited to a role as Jimmy Stewart was to play Jefferson Smith? Young, idealistic, naive, forthright and honest are just some of the adjectives that can be used to describe either.
This story is a complex one that can be viewed either as a slam or an endorsement for our government yet I wonder what light the film would be viewed in IF it was done post-Watergate and just as well as the original.
Also the other performances in the film should be noted, especially Arthur and Carey.
