Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Noel K — 17 Jan 2010
Hopeful film with a nice performance from stewart. Its very pleasant and all but at 2 hours doesbt have the plot to maintain momentum - a plain truth no matter how old and classic it is. It suffers hslf way thru from the old standin round chattin for too long about the same thing over and over but Its very pleasant, nice and quite life affirming - as youd expect from the wonderful life duo.
Then just like with wonderful life the final third elevates a good film into a great one. A humdinger of a finale as Stewart makes his stand. Youre there with him. Its brilliant stuff and completely makes the film what it is.
It makes it important. It makes it have a bucket load of meaning and ensures its classic status now and forever more. Its basically all about stewart here and some memorable lines....."Always try to see life around you as if youve just come out of a tunnel.
" Dont watch white chicks or meet the spartans for the 5th time - watch this timeless little thing for the first time instead.
