Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Ben R — 21 Feb 2010
It's Frank Capra week at the Roberts' household.
This was another excellent movie about someone standing up to the political machine. It does an excellent job showing government corruption and how much control people with money have in policy as well as public opinion.
My complaint with the movie is how much reverence they give to Lincoln. They make Lincoln out to be the greatest defender of liberty and the constitution this nation has ever known, when in fact he was a tyrant and a despot. I can't really blame Mr Capra for this since Lincoln worship has been pushed on us all in state run schools for years now, but Lincoln was not the champion of freedom, liberty and the American way. Well, maybe he established the American way of bombing your enemies into submission and thinking you can all be friends afterwards.
But, if you overlook the Lincoln worship it's a good movie with an excellent message. We need more Mr. Smith's in this country.
