Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by M W — 06 Aug 2008
Frank Capra's classic 1939 film about the Everyman Jefferson Smith (James Stewart) who faces a corrupt Washington senate and triumphs through sheer determination to hold fast to his strong moral core, aided of course by his personal secretary (played by Jean Arthur).
Claude Rains impresses as the mentor who sells Smith out and frames him to protect his own backside. Nominated for 11 Oscars it won only one losing out to Gone With the Wind.
