Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Suvi L — 26 Dec 2009
A brilliant and inspiring tale of a seemingly powerless Senator taking on the special interest that controls the entire Senate and his entire home state. This movie is great for political and Congressional junkies like myself, and feels especially compelling in light of the health care legislation going through Congress (I watched this in late September 2009). Senator Paine's comments on how he once had Senator Smith's ideals but he compromised to serve in the Senate speaks to the classic dilemma confronting every high-minded idealist who wants to serve in public office.
Senator Jefferson Smith and his aide, the intelligent and strong-minded (if cynical) Clarissa Saunders, make the perfect team - he the high-minded and well-intentioned idealist, she the hard-headed and wily strategist. It was great to watch them work together in the final scenes to save the lost cause. The ending was a bit abrupt, but it works.
