Review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) by Andrew N — 26 Feb 2010
While it strives for feel-good and patriotic, it comes across as more schmaltzy for the most part. To start, James Stewart is always fantastic, and the scenes of him just being awesome are great. But then we get these ridiculous montages of statues and children and it is just so cheesy.
Very much a movie of its time. I was also dumbfounded by how there were parades and banners for this man after having him talk for like twelve hours. The things like that in this film are nothing short of ridiculous, and drag it down.
Thankfully, Capra would reach perfection seven years later with It's A Wonderful Life. It's not a bad film by any means, it's just an old film, and some elements come across as stupid to me, which can't be helped.
