Review of Mr. Popper's Penguins (2011) by Zachariah C — 09 Apr 2012
The penguins were the highlight of the movie. I could see taking Mr. Popper and putting him next to Fletcher Reede and seeing little difference. Was that the goal? To recreate Liar Liar with penguins? If so, big time fail, because Liar Liar was classic.
Putting Jim Carey back in that role as the father that needs to get close to his kids again is a shame. Carey in roles where he gets to play around are always best. Dress him up as The Grinch, put him in Lemony Snicket's and let him run wild.
..do not confine him to this father role. His best time in the movie is just the interaction with the penguins. Also, Carla Gugino has been all over the map with her roles. She has great potential, but this was certainly not a role in which she could shine.
