Review of Mr. Popper's Penguins (2011) by Jesse H — 22 Jun 2012
Mr. Popper's Penguins is little more then a shallow children's film that believes that just because it has penguins and Jim Carrey it can get away with anything, including a lame plot and toilet humor.
My first problem with this movie is Jim Carrey. Now, I'd like to say in advance that he is one of my favorite actors, but I didn't feel that he was necessary for this film. Any actor in Hollywood could play the role of Mr.
Popper in this movie, so Jim Carrey really brought nothing to the role. Beyond that, the film doesn't use Carrey correctly. Also, the penguins are disturbing. This film has succeeded in ruining penguins for me, mainly with that disturbing squawk that appears throughout the film.
Meanwhile the plot of the movie is stunning only in its' mediocrity . The plot is basically standard kids movie cliches that refuses to even attempt to do something new. In fact, Mr. Popper's Penguins is memorable only in how forgettable it is.
In 4 years from now, no one will even remember this film was ever made. Yes, the film is harmless, but it is that very harmlessness that makes in unforgivably upsetting. No imagination was placed in this film; not by the writers, director, or even Jim Carrey.
The film falters not do to a misstep on the part of the film, but rather on the film's failure to even attempt to succeed. But, I will concede that children will probably enjoy it. Notice, however, that I didn't say they would remember it , just that children would definitely enjoy this film.
So, in conclusion, Mr. Popper's Penguins could have used a large dose of imagination. My recommendation, your kids may enjoy it, but I doubt that anyone over the age of 18 will receive any entertainment from Mr.
Popper's Penguins. 2/5 stars.
