Review of Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014) by Dannyboy S — 03 May 2014
A CGI version of a classic cartoon series, this kids movie manages to be funny and heartfelt at the same time, in a way that works for children and adults alike. A decent, fun story that gets going quickly, depicting times right before the French Revolution, and keeps going briskly, from Present Day New York to Ancient Egypt, Florence and Ancient Greece, until the very end where the space-time continuum is threatened.
No chance you'll lose interest. The jokes are great - puns, catch phrases, sarcasm, poop and fart jokes, witty one-liners, everything's here. Also, movie references, from 'The Matrix' to '300' and probably others I missed.
But mainly the movie is about history, thanks to the time travel angle. You visit a bunch of destinations which I've already mentioned, with the reason being only for moderately educational purposes.
Some trivia, but it's more about adventure while perhaps motivating younger viewers to think a little. But it's rather basic trivia. What kept me enthusiastic the whole way through was the zingers which frequently made me laugh, the commendable animation, and the much-needed family drama that came from the father-son relationship.
Never for a second do you doubt that Mr Peabody loves Sherman, and amazingly I didn't care too much that he was a dog who adopted a child.
