Review of Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014) by Brett H — 14 Apr 2015
A charming if somewhat routine animated film that is perfect for families to enjoy that also manages to make learning history cool! Ty Burrell is perfect as Mr. Peabody and he manages to pull off a calm, dry demeanor and cringe-inducing puns effortlessly.
The story is nothing special and a bit all over the place, but there are plenty of clever jokes involving historical events most notably the Trojan horse gag. There were a few missteps I didn't think worked such as Sherman's running gag about not getting the joke and a really dramatic missed opportunity that they started to entertain, and then quickly backed out of.
What can I say? It's another Dreamworks animation which means it will be full of dated jokes, unnecessary musical moments, and a sappy message at the ending, but this film is totally watchable for families and people who want something a bit lighter.
Easily could've been worse.
