Review of Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014) by Joanna B — 05 Jul 2015
The most extraordinary Mr. Peabody (voiced by Modern Family Emmy Award (R) Winner - Ty Burrell) is a business titan, inventor, scientist, Nobel Laureate, gourmand, two-time Olympic medallist, and genius... who also just happens' to be a dog.
But surpassing his numerous personal accomplishments, Mr. Peabody's greatest joy is with his mischievous adopted human son Sherman (voiced by The Amazing Spider Man's - Max Charles). Determined to take yet another title as the world's best dad, the virtuoso K-9 designs a time travel machine to bond with his son and experience history's defining moment's first-hand.
But when Sherman decides to take the WABAC machine out for a joyride, he accidentally rips a hole in the universe, wreaking havoc on the fabric of the space time continuum.
Facing the possibility or forever altering the past, present and future, our two heroes find themselves on a comical time travel adventure in a race to repair history and save the future, but Mr. Peabody must also grapple with the biggest challenge of any era: how to be a good parent.
Originally part of the 1960's Rocky and Bullwinkle show, from the creators of The Croods and How to train your dragon, DreamWorks Animation brings a long forgotten classic children's comedy to a whole new generation.
An exciting look at historical characters and events that sits somewhere between an intellectual Bill and Ted's and Jimmy Neuron, Mr Peabody & Sherman creatively ties in three major historical eras. Ancient Egypt and a romance with King Tut, the Italian Renaissance flying high in a comic routine with Da Vinci and his frowning muse; and the Trojan War with its band of burly but goofy soldiers.
The Verdict: Although the plot and script occasionally confused as to whether it is based in its original 70's setting or todays 20teens, this movie successfully harks back to a cleaver theme that never does out of style and once again poses the question; If we could time travel - where would we go and what, if anything, would we change?
