Review of Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014) by Jojojumpy — 12 Mar 2014
I really wanted to dislike this movie, as almost every Hollywood reboot is complete trash, but this movie is surprisingly good. I'm a fan of the original show, and they did really well in both respecting the old, and adding some new stuff in.
There was a bit of the expected gross out humor / stupid childish stuff, but they didn't let it overwhelm the movie.
Mr. Peabody is a genuinely intelligent character and has genuinely intelligent dialogue. They didn't just fake it, they actually put some effort into it. That alone is worth the price of admission, as it is so different from everything else coming out of Hollywood today.
The beginning of the movie starts in a way familiar to fans of the show. Peabody and Sherman go back in time and have a little adventure after a spunky introduction. They get into a bind, Peabody solves it with his super smarts, and then it ends with a history pun. It's very fast paced and doesn't waste your time.
After that, they introduce a new emotional dynamic to their relationship, which I found genuinely touching.
