Phiip French called this a 'comic thriller'. Well, it's very funny and very thrilling, but there's still some pretty serious (even scary) stuff there. My guess is that critics who objected to this movie (and I don't mean Philip French, of course) did so because they have their own agenda: we know what that is, but it's certainly not reviewing the film by its merits.
