Review of Mr. Nice (2010) by David T — 06 Feb 2011
For most Howard Marks is a cult hero.
An accolade not often associated with too many drug dealers.
This movie depicts his life from the humble beginnings in a Welsh town, to studying at Oxford (where he would discover drugs) to his globetrotting smuggling for which he was famed for.
Marks belief that he wasn't a criminal or guilty of any wrong doing and that Hashish should not be classed as being against the law because it came from a natural plant helped build his reputation and folk law.
He also claims to have worked or had connections for both M16 & the IRA during his career as a smuggler.
The movie is beautifully shot and has a almost pastel feel to it.
Rhys Ifans is awesome as Howard "Mr Nice" Marks and you feel a warmth towards him from the start.
He is backed up by a more then capable support cast and this Adds to the realism. The movie for the most part is fairly light-hearted despite it being about the infamous drug smugglers life but it also has elements of suspense during scenes like the car search or when the Police arrive to bust the drug ring.
I think fans interested in Marks life will really enjoy this.
