Review of Mr. Nice (2010) by Ted N — 18 May 2011
Vastly overlong, rambling account of a life wasted (in both senses). I confess never to having heard of the tacky and charmless Howard Marks, and now I am sorry I have - thanks to the no less charmless and self-regarding Rhys Ifans.
Nothing like funny enough to be the Ealingesque comedy it seems to take itself for (especially at first), and with insufficient sympathy to carry the pathos it attempts later. Interesting direction, though, squandered on an unworthy subject.
The clever period montages work well as does the B&W - colour fade after the historical introduction.
