Review of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007) by Neil L — 31 Dec 2010
Not the disaster the hyperactive trailer was promising but hardly a masterpiece, Mr Magorium's wacky title is just as wacky as the film itself. However, its sickeningly sweet centre is its main flaw and it just tries way too hard to be cute and surreal.
Hoffman and Portman do their best and the whole thing is written with a lot of heart and colourful enough, with some visually inventive ideas here and there, but overall it just doesn't work. Like Toys, by focusing on the visual style of the film it forgets to feel real.
Zach Helm is a terrific writer but, it seems, needs more practice with directing. Still, enjoyable enough for kids.
