Review of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007) by Chris M — 13 Jan 2012
Christmas Family Film Review... The titular emporium is in fact pretty wondrous. If I was 10 I'd probably spend all day there. It's a shame, then, that the rest is so ordinary. It feels like this film was made because Dustin Hoffman wanted it so. He's predictably kooky and enthusiastic as Mr Magorium, but after a few minutes you've seen pretty much all there is to see. Natalie Portman's performance is back in the realms of Thor, and Phantom Menace rather than Black Swan (i.e. POOR).
When a film sets its stall out with the word 'wonder' in the title, it should try a bit harder to live up to that promise. Worth seing once if your kids would enjoy it. But that's as far as I can go...
