Review of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007) by Louisa M — 22 Jul 2009
I'm honestly shocked that this film has such a bad rating. Though it has its flaws (after all, this is Helm's first go as a director), it is an excellent film.
I have a hard time even calling this a children's movie. The dialogue is highly intelligent and witty. The characters are fascinating, the performances are not typical (in the good way), and the story is compelling. It became an instant favorite after watching it.
What I personally liked most about the film is that it deals with a subject matter that is not only ignored within the world of children's entertainment, but in the film industry as a whole.
It's a unique and thoughtful take on what it means to live, and what it means to die.
I did feel that the ending could have been stronger. But for me, the rest of the movie was so right, that I was still ultimately satisfied.
Give it a shot. Though I must warn, by doing so, you will be in constant danger of enlightenment.
