Review of Mr. Holmes (2015) by Stephen R — 11 Feb 2016
A very BBC feeling, or rather English at least affair, for better and worse...for worse, being that its relatively slowly and action less but the good outweigh any weaknesses, from the obvious like a strong cast with Sir Ian McKellan and Laura Linney.
..its a compelling old age tale of the titular man, mostly shown in his last era living reclusively with Linney and her young son and some cool bees and also flashbacks of his final cases as a for hire detective.
..no Watson...no flashy text messages...this is the old school Sherlock...and its a bit refreshing...wih Gandalf sounding narration and of course a strong script, winning drama director Bill Condon seems to always win with Sir Ian and real life characters (they made the great and similar Gods and Monsters and he also directed the terrific Kinsey).
..while not the best movie ever, it is certainly oscar level and will definitely delight fans of Sherlock, esp the old school and English filmmaking and story telling...there are some nifty little cinematic flashes that provide unexpected and welcome pizazz and its all beautifully shot and moving.
