Review of Mr. Holmes (2015) by Jeremy B — 14 Feb 2016
Ian McKellen is marvelous in "Mr. Holmes," a small, quiet rebuttal to the over-produced Guy Ritchie-Robert Downey Jr. "Sherlock Holmes" franchise. McKellen's version of Holmes is the revisionist version - no houndstooth hat this time - and he is seen here as a fragile physical figure who is only beginning to grasp that he loved being the legend that he outwardly disdained.
