Review of Mr. Holmes (2015) by Ivor K — 26 Apr 2016
A long retired nonagenarian Sherlock Holmes is reduced to using supplements such as royal jelly in an (ultimately futile) attempt to postpone advancing mental decrepitude. His last self-appointed task is to write a true account of his last case, rather than the largely fictional narrative created by his one time colleague and successful author, Dr.
Watson. His only interactions are with an unwilling housekeeper and her inquisitive son, whose probing questions prove to be the key that unlock the unsettling details of Holmes' valedictory case as the renowned detective.
I've always felt the various portrayals of Holmes down through the years have been a bit forced or even hackneyed but McKellen's version is utterly believable. A fine piece of movie making if a little over long.
