Review of Mr. Holmes (2015) by Jeff F — 04 Aug 2015
Mr. Holmes.
An elderly Sherlock Holmes struggles to recount the details to an unsolved case that led to his retirement.
Although Mr. Holmes is an interesting take on the literary legend in the twilight of his life and the performances of all the actors involved are in top form, especially Sir Ian McKellen with an Oscar-bait portrayal of the title character, the film has its shortcomings. The running time is only an hour and forty-five minutes but feels much longer while details of two of the three storylines seem vague. Whether the vagueness was intentional for artistic purposes or if the filmmakers were forced into making cuts is not quite clear but it hurt the final product nonetheless.
Grade: B-.
Big Al says Mr. Holmes is a solid renter.
