Review of Mr. Holmes (2015) by Mad M — 16 Oct 2015
Ian McKellen delivered one of the best performances of 2015 in Mr. Holmes and I sincerely hope he gets an Academy Award nomination for this.
This is a film that starts slowly and go about its business rather placidly for a while. But such was the beauty of the script that the transition from bit of nothings to a whole lot of many things seemed seamless. Ian McKellen's magnificent screen presence asserted his total authority despite him playing a 92 year old who looks like he might drop dead anytime now.
Holmes' grandpa-grandson-esque camaraderie with Roger, his regrets and loneliness combining with the rare spark of trademark logical deduction, makes his character so vivid and multidimensional.
Mr. Holmes is effectively a one man show but Ian McKellen had great support from his co-stars and the help of an exquisitely written script.
