Review of Mr. Holland's Opus (1995) by Philip S — 30 Nov 2010
In an era when the teacher attrition rate is so high in America, this is a movie that is a glimmering beam of hope. It makes one believe that maybe, just maybe, there are some teachable kids out there, and that the rewards will be worth all of the struggles.
It is enjoyable on so many levels. It is enjoyable for musicians in that they would understand Mr. Holland and his mentality. It is also enjoyable for teachers in general in that they know what the characters in the movie go through, both with students and administrators. Some things are universal and transcend generations.
The struggles of the family as they grow together make for a deeply engrossing story, as well. Some of the arguments between Glenn and Iris may be difficult to handle for younger audiences, but those younger audiences could still benefit from seeing them in that their parents can explain why they were fighting. It can help to understand why some parents get divorced.
This is a movie for not only any true movie fan, but any fan of quality movies, as well and aof course for those in the education field.
