Review of Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) by Ben C — 25 Jun 2007
Just a nice simple movie that is entertaining enough to amuse while at the same time making us all question our sanity. It's nice to think that the world was less complicated back then, but then again, much of what Mr.
Deeds says applies today as well as back then. Often the "good" people, who try to do the "right" thing are regarded as lunatics. Jean Arthur can steal any scene she is in and Gary Cooper nails the aww schuck slow drawl in ways that we have come to expect from Andy Griffith and James Stewert.
Frank Capra drives home his social commentary without offending anyone (except maybe a few digs at lawyers).
