I have never seen the original though I don't think I would be off-base to state that this film is really it's own entity. Though I assume both films share a common premise the latter is really tooled to be a comedy.
It's a pretty good one too. Any comparisons to the original would not be fair. Wynona Ryder hasn't been around much in the last ten years. Kudos for her casing.
