Review of Mr. Cinema (2007) by Christopher B — 28 Mar 2008
Wow, this film pretty much hit everything I hate about Hong Kong cinema when it's at it's worst. Melodramatic and all over the place, there wasn't one character that I could give a rat's ass about.
However, I did notice a few Chinese (I believe they were, of course I don't know for sure) people in the audience who loved it and a few women were crying. So this could be the case of different cultures, where cinema tactics that would make the Westerner roll his/her eyes touches a nerve in the East.
Anyway, whether I'm cynical or not, my first instinct would be to warn anyone to stay far, far away from this one. Oh yeah, and also it was commissioned by the Chinese government for the 10 year anniversary of the handover, so it's really, really pro China.
